Photo shoot with Cameron Obscura

This last weekend was a long one indeed.  I had the privilege of a photo session with my friend Cameron Platt.  It was no easy task, but we managed to convert the warehouse adjoining my shop into a pretty workable photo studio.  The backdrop we rigged was roughly 24’ wide, 15’ tall, and 18’ deep.  A few weeks ago I realized that a rare opportunity was about to present itself where I would have a good quantity of large scale work all in the studio at the same time.  Photographing my large work is always a hassle so it made sense to get as much as we could at once, before the pieces all drifted off to various locations.  This was not a task that I could have attempted alone, and I owe many thanks to Cameron, as well as others too numerous to list.

My first priority was to document my new piece “Little Big Man” before he left the shop for a show.  I also really wanted to get images that helped to convey the scale of my bigger stuff.  I get a lot of frustrating emails from people who want to buy pieces like this for their boss’s desk.  Makes me realize that I’m not communicating very well.
Now, you might be thinking that was enough.  Wrong!  With the effort involved in setting up the space, we thought we should get the most out of it.  So, the band Maldroid was invited to have some portraits taken, as was the Bay Area Roller Derby team Shevil Dead.  See below if you need proof.
It turned out there were ample opportunities for me to act like a fool.....
There was no question however that the highlight of the project was my lovely fiancée Nancy.  With home made costumes and weapons-grade charm she transformed what surely would have been a forgetful series of sober documentation into some really terrific images.  Now if we could just go back and take those ugly bikes of mine out of the shots!
Thank you Nancy, you are a trooper.
